Ethos
To constantly monitor and encourage pupils at all levels during all aspects of science. To provide and deliver stimulating lessons to allow pupils minds to expand and think further. To aim high, and reach our goals.
Key developments
New GCSE Science schemes of work. Core and Additional
- Monitoring Coursework, and putting in place procedures to complete the new ISA (Internal School Assessment), in science.
- To continue to hold together a decent department and build upon what we have to raise attainment across the board in science.
- Continuing professional development within the department to allow the development and sharing of good teaching practice.
- To look at the start of a new BTEC course in Applied Science aimed at Post 16 pupils.
Curriculum Summary
In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils follow a modular programme consisting of 6 modules per year, 2 modules from each science strand.
In Year 10 we start to follow the GCSE Core programme, and GCSE additional science programme. Both courses allow the pupils to achieve one GCSE in science. All pupils follow the GCSE Core science, with the option of doing GCSE Applied Science. In year 11 from 2008 the pupils will continue to complete their studies in the GCSE Science courses.
We offer AS and A2 courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We also offer a BTEC qualification in Applied Sciences.
News and information
We are fortunate to be able to offer all pupils a free revision guide this year, and hope to continue this initiative into future years. We have a science club that runs every week, and allows pupils to follow their passion of science in different areas to what they may be exposed to within the classroom. We offer an end of year trip to Alton Towers to pupils that have worked above and beyond during the academic year. We are always looking at ways to enrich the learning experience to our pupils, and the curriculum weeks at Junior high have led to us to making water/MENTO rockets, to hatching live chickens over a 4 day window.
