The school endeavours to promote all students into the mainstream setting where possible. The school sees its responsibility to identify and meet individual need and to provide a caring environment. Currently 0.024 % of the school population has a statement of Special Educational Need.

Weston Favell School believes in equal access to the curriculum allied to a policy of equal opportunities for all.

Curriculum Summary

Breakfast Club
Both sites run a breakfast club / meet & greet for vulnerable students. This is a superb facility that offers an opportunity to help prepare students for the day, mentor them as well as offering an opportunity to develop social skills.

Active Learning Group
The Active Learning Group is taught by Miss Verjee, our inclusive learning teacher at Junior High. The Active Learning Group supports a cohort of students who may find accessing the main school curriculum difficult. Students are taught in a smaller group for a large number of their lessons and follow a more differentiated curriculum which takes into account their personal learning needs. All students have a personalised learning plan which aims to support them in achieving their potential.

Learning Support Unit
The Learning Support Unit (LSU) is an extension of the Inclusive Learning Department; a further support network for those students who find it difficult to access the curriculum within the main part of the school.  It is an in-school Centre which aims to support two distinctive cohorts:

  • pupils who are at risk of permanent exclusion
  • anxious school-refusers

It provides separate short-term teaching and support for those students not functioning within the school system. It challenges the students to learn how to learn, to develop self belief and self esteem, to improve behaviour management skills and to increase their level of responsibility and progress through individual target setting and self evaluation.   Support programmes are tailored to the needs of individual students whilst their behaviour, social or attendance issues are tackled.  The LSU is not a "sin bin": the aim is to maintain young people in mainstream education.

The LSU has a high staff to student ratio (currently six staff: 40 stduents); with clear entry and exit criteria and supports a multi-agency approach towards supporting students who are at risk and need access to a more personalised programme with alternatives including college placements and extended work experience.  The achievement and progress of students in the LSU is nurtured in a supportive, well structured and challenging learning environment built on consistency, respect and high expectations at all times.

Protective Behaviours Group
A number of staff within the department have completed training and are able to run a Protective Behaviours group. This is a practical approach to personal safety and involves encouraging self empowerment. It teaches students the skills to avoid being victimised. We run a number of groups in school.

Literacy Support Groups
A number of students with SEN have access to additional literacy support groups to consolidate key skills. Groups are small and provide specialised teaching to raise attainment and self esteem.

Science Support Group
A science support group runs four times a cycle to support students with EAL to access science and understand terminology. This is run by a specialist science teacher Mrs Alaka who also supports students with coursework and preparations for exams.

EAL
There has been a significant improvement in the provision offered to EAL students in the school since Mrs Campbell joined us in October. She has taken on the teaching of EAL students who have been assessed using ‘Ages & Stages’ as being level 1-3. She teaches this cohort of students for two lessons a week. In total Mrs Campbell teaches 74 students with EAL needs at least twice a week.

GCSE Polish
Mrs Everest is supporting s group of our Polish Students to prepare for and access GCSE Polish this year. This is an exciting new development.

NSP
The inclusive learning department recognises the need to offer a broad curriculum to meet the variety of needs of students and therefore offers the National Skills Profile course. This is an accredited course which focuses primarily on communication and other key skills. Students complete a variety of projects for which they receive certificates.

Social Skills Group
A number of social skills groups run to help support students to learn key skills including turn taking, assertiveness, and how to recognise body language. This sessions make use of Circle Time activities and help to raise self esteem and self awareness.

‘Success maker’ Programme
The ‘Successmaker’ integrated learning system is available in school for students with learning difficulties. The programme is tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals. It helps to develop key skills in literacy and numeracy. ‘Sucessmaker’ sessions run during registration and after school in addition to the school day.

Alterative Curriculum
Weston Favell School offer a growing number of alternative placements for a cohort of students who would benefit from some form of alternative curriculum arrangements. Some students in Key Stage Four have the opportunity to do a college placement one day per week. We have successfully placed students on courses in Bricklaying & Construction, Plumbing, Hairdressing and Carpentry. In addition some of our students access Education Youth Service (EYS) or the Springboard Project for some or all of their time at school.

Some students in key stage three and four have the opportunity to attend the Acceleration Project which helps to build self esteem and confidence.

School Counsellors
There is a facility for one to one mentoring and counselling in school with two trained counsellors who are housed in the Inclusive Learning Area. This provision is available as a drop-in facility and by referral by staff or students themselves. The aim is to support all students within the school community. The counsellors also run small group sessions on friendship and bullying.

Outside Agencies
The Inclusive Learning Department works very closely with a range of outside agencies including BACIN Team, Young Carers, Children & Family Service, YOT Team, ART Team, Lighthouse Trust, Sunflower Centre, NAYC, U Turn, CAN, NSPCC, CAMHS, Briar Hill Family Resource Centre, Solve It, CAN, Wellingborough Prison, Glen Pavar Prison, Connexions and the Race Equality Team to offer support for students with specific needs.
