Best GCSE Results Since 1993

“Rising to the Challenge: Weston Favell School – Best GCSE results since 1993”

Staff and students at Weston Favell School have met the ‘National Challenge’ target set for them by Education Secretary, Ed Balls.  The school has surpassed the target set by the Local Authority in achieving its best GCSE results for 16 years with 40% of their Year 11 cohort achieving 5 or more GCSE passes at A*-C.  The pass rate including English and Maths has risen by 12% to hit the National Challenge target of 30%. Headteacher, Dr Tracey Jones states, “I’m thrilled, this shows what can be done in our new state-of-the-art buildings and paves the way for the school to move from strength to strength, with the capacity for further sustained improvement.”

Acting Headteacher (from September) Alun Rees comments, “I am delighted by the outcome, which is a testament to the hard work and effort put in by the students and staff.  When our results are compared to similar schools nationally, Weston Favell will be placed in the top 25% of schools in the country!  I am very proud of all the students’ achievements which represent our comprehensive intake and inclusive ethos. Their grade average achieved has improved by almost a full grade per student based on last year’s results. Not only are these a fantastic set of figures, but some of the individual successes are a tribute to those who went the extra mile.  In particular, I would like to mention a couple of Polish students Natalia Trzeciecka and Justina Smugala who joined us 4 years ago with very little spoken English.  They both received support from our EAL staff and have achieved 19 passes between them. Other students with outstanding results who also achieved 10 GCSE passes include: Selina Armitt (5A*, 5A); Savan Haria (6A*, 3A, 1B); Richard Golsby (3A*, 6A, 1B) and Rebecca Bird (2A*, 6A, 2 B).  Another talented student is superb artist, Leon Young, with a double A* in Applied Art and also an A grade at AS level, which he took a year early.”

Post 16 Examination Results Summer 2009

Weston Favell School is once again encouraged by its A2 results for its Year 13 students for the summer of 2009. The pass rate at A2 stands at 96%, which is broadly in line with the national average.  A to C grades stand at a creditable 54% and there were only four fail (U) grades from all entries.  The outgoing Headteacher, Dr TraceyJones, said: “I am pleased by these figures. It is testimony to the hard work and dedication of the students and staff.  Our A level results have risen steadily for the past four years and held firm this year; this is a fantastic indicator of the school’s stability”.

The new Acting Headteacher, from 1 September, Mr Alun Rees comments: “this shows that the school is impacting positively on young people’s education and maintaining creditable post 16 standards. There are some fantastic stories of individual success, such as Milo Kerr who got three A grades, one B as well as an A grade in AS Further Maths and Emma Moss who got an A grade and two B grades”. Other individual students who have done well, and achieved at least three A levels at C grade or better, are Daniel Billingham, Parit Shah, Nathan Coles, Rochelle Lee, Eleanor Shingles-Magden and Andrew Duong.

Individual subjects which have done well at A2 level are Maths, Drama, Law and Sociology, all of which have a 100% pass rate. Indeed all but three subjects gained 100% pass rate. In addition to this many Year 13 students gained an extra AS level in either General Studies or Critical Thinking. The school is also pleased that all those applying for university or higher education have secured a place, with the vast majority getting their first choice.
